#Cattle #Hashtag?  What's That?

10/17/2013

Hashtags are any word in the social conversation that begins with the "#" symbol.  Americans refer to it as a "pound sign", but it's known as a "hash" pretty much everywhere else.  A "#" in front of a word like "cattle" makes it a hashtag: “#cattle”

WHERE DO I USE HASHTAGS?

Hashtags are most popular on social media websites.  They became a trend on Twitter first.  After that, other sites slowly began to incorporate their use.  Facebook is one of the last social media sites to use hashtags.

WHAT ARE HASHTAGS USED FOR?

Hashtags let you associate your social media posts with a larger topic, group or conversation.  It's like adding keywords to your message to make it globally searchable.

WHEN SHOULD I USE A HASHTAG?

You should use a hashtag when you are trying to talk about a specific topic. You can use one that's already created or completely make up your own and get a new topic started.  Once you begin using hashtags, get creative and use keywords that others will search for.  Doing so will enable others to find your contribution to the global conversation without having to know or follow you.

HOW DO I USE HASHTAGS?

Using hashtags is easy.  You simply put the "#" sign in front of whatever it is you are trying to associate your post with.  For example, #LivestockMarkets.  A hashtag has to be one word or a phrase that is written together without spaces or punctuation.  Underscores can be used, however.

Here a few examples of hashtag searches:

In conclusion, even though hashtags are relatively new to the world of business, their use is an essential marketing tool.  Using hashtags will not only allow you to find people who share similar interests or types of business, but will help potential customers discover your company.  Make it a habit to throw in a hashtag or two in your every day social media posts.  You could be rewarded with new customers, followers/friends, and essential business awareness.
